Earlier today, the White House announced that all nonessential travel between the U.S. and Mexico will stop, as of Saturday, March 21st, in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
This agreement follows the partial closing of the U.S. border with Canada announced earlier this week. The agreements with Canada and Mexico both go into effect on Saturday, March 21st. However, these travel restrictions are clear that they DO NOT APPLY to "lawful trade or commerce," and essential commercial activities. The restrictions at these borders will be reviewed after 30 days.
The State Department (DOS) says it is temporarily suspending routine visa services at all U.S. embassies and consulates because of the coronavirus. As early as last week, some routine U.S. visa services had already been suspended in some countries, but with the pandemic hitting on a global level, those services have been suspended across the globe.
Additionally, the DOS issued its highest travel warning (Level 4) on March 19, instructing U.S. citizens NOT TO TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY and urging those who are overseas to return home or be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period of time.
